The major organic chemical compound present in the caraway is carvone.
Medicinal properties:-
Antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, analgestic, diuretic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic.
Medicinal uses:-
- Caraway is used for gastrointestinal cramps and feelings of fullness, as well as nervous cardiac complaints, spasmodic gastrointestinal complaints, flatulence, irritable stomach, indigestion, lack of appetite, dyspepsia in adults, and in relieving flatulent colic of infants.
- It is also used as a tranquilizer, diuretic, gastric stimulant, aphrodisiac, astringent.
- It is used for the treatment of morning sickness, headache, to improve liver function, bronchopulmonary disorder, cough, and as an analgesic.
- The vapor of caraway seeds is used for lumbago and rheumatism.
- Seeds of caraway are used for the treatment of scabies.
- Caraway was also used to improve lactation in nursing mothers.
